What is a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF/OPF)?
The GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) or OPF (Otto Particulate Filter) is a device located in the exhaust system, similar to the DPF on diesel engines, whose sole purpose is to trap and eliminate the soot particles generated in direct injection engines.
Because gasoline engines operate at higher temperatures than diesel engines, the process of cleaning or regenerating the filter is simpler and generally less problematic. However, its physical presence remains an obstacle to the flow of
exhaust gases.
The Enthusiast's Problem: Why Override a GPF?
• Restriction and Loss of Power: The filter acts as a "plug" in the exhaust system. This back pressure limits the engine's ability to expel exhaust gases, restricting the power and torque it could develop.
• Muffled Exhaust Sound : This is the most common complaint. The GPF muffles and filters the engine's natural, sporty sound, eliminating much of its character and pops and bangs, resulting in a much quieter and more civilized tone than desired.
